16 Year-Old Coaches

Chad Belveal – 16’s Elite

Coach Belveal is in his fifth season with the Colorado Chaos. He will coach the 16’s Elite team for the second season in a row after previously coaching the 15’s Blue, 14’s Blue and 17’s Green.

Belveal has been a high school coach for 18 years and a head coach for 13 years. He has a reputation as a program builder, having taken three non-winning programs to league prominence and state playoff berths. Belveal started his coaching career at Wray High School, where he took the Eagles to the state playoffs three consecutive seasons after a 30 year hiatus from the state playoffs. When he left Wray, he had more wins than any other coach in Wray basketball history. Following his career at Wray, Belveal moved on to coach at Air Academy High School. In his second season Coach Belveal took the Kadets to the state tournament after 12 years of missing the playoffs. Belveal’s Kadet team then returned to the playoffs for a second straight season, marking the first time they made the playoffs in consecutive seasons since 1989.Belveal recently finished his third season at Cheyenne Mountain High School, where he has guided the Indians to 48 wins so far and turned them into a perennial league title contender. The year before arrived at Cheyenne Mountain, they won only 5 games and the 13 win improvement was the most of any 4A team in the state that year. His team this year was ranked in the Top Ten for much of the season and advanced to the 4A Sweet Sixteen.

Belveal teaches Physical Education at Cheyenne Mountain and is a graduate of the University of Northern Colorado. He and his wife Joanne have three boys, Robbie, Kai and Tory, all of whom play for the Colorado Chaos.

 

J. Cates – 16’s BlueCoach Cates is in his second season coaching the Colorado Chaos.  He will coach the 16’s Blue this season after coaching the highly successful 14’s Blue team last year.

Coach “J” brings 12 plus years of experience to the program and has been very successful the past 5 years varying from club organizations to the high school level. Last year he transitioned from the boys Head JV Coach at Sand Creek High School to the Assistant Varsity Coach for the Sand Creek girls program. Coach “J” brings that “can do” attitude to the program, selfless devotion, and willingness to learn. He is responsible for the mentoring of several young men playing on the boy’s side of the program.J. Cates is a System Administrator Sr. for Lockheed Martin.  He and his wife Nicole have one son, J.J. who plays for the Colorado Chaos and three girls, Chianne, Neyhanna, and Sanee’ all of whom play ball for various club organizations. 

 

Cass Behrens – 16’s BlackCoach Behrens is in his first season coaching the Colorado Chaos. He will coach the 16s Black team this year.

Coach Behrens is a former Colorado Chaos player who played on the top team at his age level every year he was with the Chaos. He is also a member of the prestigious Colorado Chaos 1,000 Point Club. Collegiately, he played basketball for four years at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa where he was an all conference player.Behrens currently is an Automotive Sales Representative with the Denver Post. His brother Kyle is also a former Colorado Chaos player and an All Conference player at Fort Lewis.

 

 

Marc Gorenstein – 16’s BlackCoach Gorenstein is in his first season coaching the Colorado Chaos. He will coach the 16s Black team this year.

A former Chaos player, Coach Gorenstein played basketball for four years at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. After completing his four years of basketball he stayed for half the 2010 season to be an assistant coach. He left Iowa after his student teaching was done and continued to be an assistant coach for the Silver Creek High School boys program.Gorenstein is in his first year of being an elementary Physical Education teacher in the Clear Creek School district. His sister is also assistant coaching the girl’s basketball program at Arvada West High School.
